Johann Joachim Quantz

Bio

Johann Joachim Quantz (1697–1773) was a German flutist, flute maker, and composer of the late Baroque period. Born in Oberscheden near Hanover, he trained in Dresden and served as court musician to Frederick the Great in Berlin and Potsdam from 1741 until his death. Quantz composed over 300 concertos and numerous sonatas for flute, along with chamber music and sacred works. He authored the influential treatise Versuch einer Anweisung die Flöte traversiere zu spielen (1752), which remains a key source on 18th-century performance practice. His music reflects the galant style while retaining Baroque contrapuntal elements.
