Giovanni Gabrieli

Giovanni Gabrieli (c. 1557–1612) was an Italian composer and organist of the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods. He served as principal organist and composer at St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, where he developed the Venetian polychoral style that exploited the building’s spatial acoustics. His compositions, including the Sacrae Symphoniae (1597) and posthumous collections, feature antiphonal writing for multiple choirs and instrumental ensembles. These works influenced the transition from Renaissance to Baroque music and helped establish the concertato principle. Gabrieli’s pupils included Heinrich Schütz, and his innovations in orchestration and spatial effects left a lasting mark on European sacred music.
