Ashford & Simpson were an American songwriting and recording duo formed in 1964 by Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson. They became prominent figures in the soul and disco scenes, writing hits for artists such as Marvin Gaye, Tammi Terrell, and Chaka Khan before achieving success as performers themselves. Their 1984 single "Solid" became their biggest hit, reaching the top of the Billboard R&B chart. The pair continued to record and perform together until Ashford's death in 2011.
