Johnny Ventura

Johnny Ventura (1940–2021) was a Dominican singer, bandleader and politician who became one of the most influential figures in modern merengue. Born Juan de Jesús Ventura Soriano in Santo Domingo, he began his career in the late 1950s and rose to prominence in the 1960s by fusing traditional merengue with salsa, rock and other Caribbean rhythms, creating a high-energy style that helped popularize the genre internationally. Known as "El Caballo Mayor," Ventura led his own orchestra for more than five decades, releasing dozens of albums and earning the nickname "El Rey del Merengue." Beyond music, he served as a deputy in the Dominican Congress and as mayor of Santo Domingo, using his platform to promote cultural and social causes until his death in 2021.
