Mohammed Rafi (24 December 1924 – 31 July 1980) was an Indian playback singer whose career spanned four decades and encompassed more than 7,000 songs in numerous Indian languages. Born in Kotla Sultan Singh, Punjab, he became one of the most versatile and widely recorded voices in the history of Indian cinema, performing in genres ranging from classical and ghazal to folk and devotional music. Rafi’s distinctive timbre and emotional range made him the preferred vocalist for leading composers such as Naushad, Shankar–Jaikishan, and S. D. Burman. His work in films like Mughal-e-Azam, Pyaasa, and Shree 420 helped define the golden era of Bollywood music, and his recordings remain benchmarks for subsequent generations of singers.
