The Philadelphia Orchestra is an American symphony orchestra founded in 1900 and based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It quickly rose to prominence under conductors such as Leopold Stokowski and Eugene Ormandy, becoming one of the “Big Five” U.S. orchestras. The ensemble is renowned for its lush, rich string tone and has recorded extensively for RCA, Columbia, and Deutsche Grammophon. It has premiered works by Rachmaninoff, Barber, and contemporary composers, and maintains a strong presence through regular Carnegie Hall appearances and international tours. The orchestra also operates community and education programs via its home at the Kimmel Center.
