About
Malcolm John Rebennack Jr., known professionally as Dr. John, was an American singer, pianist and songwriter from New Orleans. He rose to prominence in the late 1960s with his voodoo-infused swamp-blues persona and the hit “Right Place Wrong Time.” Over a six-decade career he blended New Orleans R&B, blues, funk and jazz, releasing more than twenty studio albums and winning six Grammy Awards including a Lifetime Achievement Award. He collaborated with artists such as Allen Toussaint, the Meters and the Rolling Stones, and remained a central figure in preserving and modernizing New Orleans musical traditions until his death in 2019.
