About
Aram Khachaturian was a Soviet-Armenian composer born in Tbilisi in 1903. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory under Nikolai Myaskovsky and became one of the leading Soviet composers of the 20th century. His music fuses Armenian folk elements with Russian classical traditions, producing vivid orchestral colors and rhythmic drive. Major works include the ballets Gayane and Spartacus, the Piano Concerto, and the Violin Concerto. He also composed film scores and chamber music, and served as a cultural ambassador for Soviet Armenia. Khachaturian received numerous state honors including the Stalin Prize and Lenin Prize.
