Luiz Bonfá

Luiz Bonfá was a Brazilian guitarist and composer born in Rio de Janeiro in 1922. He rose to prominence in the 1950s as a key figure in the bossa nova movement, writing the classic “Manhã de Carnaval” for the film Black Orpheus. His fingerstyle technique and harmonic sophistication influenced generations of guitarists worldwide. Bonfá recorded extensively for labels including Philips and Verve, collaborating with Stan Getz, Frank Sinatra, and Quincy Jones. He remained active until his death in 2001, leaving a catalog that bridges samba, jazz, and classical idioms.
