About
Giuseppe Torelli was an Italian violinist, teacher, and composer of the late Baroque period. Born in Verona in 1658, he became one of the most important figures in the development of the solo concerto and concerto grosso forms. He served as a violinist and later as maestro di cappella at the San Petronio Basilica in Bologna, where he composed many of his instrumental works. His Op. 6 set of twelve concerti grossi helped establish the genre, and his trumpet concertos remain staples of the Baroque repertoire. Torelli’s music bridged the gap between the sonata and the emerging concerto style, influencing later composers such as Vivaldi and Bach.
