About
R.E.M. formed in Athens, Georgia in 1980 and became one of the most influential American rock bands of their era. Their jangly guitar sound and cryptic lyrics helped define the college-rock and alternative scenes of the 1980s. The band achieved mainstream success with albums such as Document, Out of Time, and Automatic for the People, scoring hits like "Losing My Religion" and "Everybody Hurts." R.E.M. remained on the independent label IRS Records until 1988, then moved to Warner Bros. for the rest of their career. They disbanded in 2011 after 31 years together, having sold more than 85 million records worldwide.
