About
Erik Satie was a French composer and pianist born in Honfleur in 1866. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire but rejected its academic conventions, developing a minimalist and often ironic style that anticipated 20th-century modernism. His early piano works such as the Gymnopédies and Gnossiennes established his reputation for sparse, atmospheric writing. Later pieces like Socrate and the ballet Parade, scored with contributions from Cocteau and Picasso, expanded his reach into theatrical and avant-garde circles. Satie influenced Debussy, Ravel, and later generations of minimalists and experimental composers. He remained an eccentric outsider in Parisian musical life until his death in 1925.
