Red Garland

William McKinley 'Red' Garland Jr. was an American jazz pianist born in Dallas, Texas, in 1923. He rose to prominence in the 1950s as a member of the Miles Davis Quintet, contributing to landmark recordings such as 'Workin' with the Miles Davis Quintet' and 'Steamin' with the Miles Davis Quintet'. Garland developed a distinctive block-chord style and was known for his blues-inflected phrasing and rhythmic drive. After leaving Davis, he led his own trio and recorded extensively for Prestige Records, releasing albums like 'Red Garland's Piano' and 'All Mornin' Long'. He remained active through the 1960s and 1970s, later returning to the scene in the 1980s before his death in 1984.
