Lester Young

Lester Young was an American jazz tenor saxophonist and clarinetist born in Woodville, Mississippi, and raised in New Orleans and Minneapolis. He rose to prominence in the 1930s with Count Basie’s orchestra, where his light, floating tone and relaxed phrasing helped define the swing-to-bebop transition. Young’s nickname “Pres” was bestowed by Billie Holiday; the two frequently collaborated and recorded together. His influential solos on tracks such as “Lester Leaps In” and his work with Nat King Cole and the Kansas City Six cemented his status as a pioneer of modern jazz saxophone. Young’s later years were marked by health struggles, yet his recordings continued to shape generations of saxophonists including Stan Getz and Dexter Gordon.
