About

Wynton Kelly was an American jazz pianist born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1931. He rose to prominence in the 1950s, recording with Dinah Washington and becoming a key member of Miles Davis’s sextet from 1959 to 1963. Kelly’s fluid, blues-inflected style and rhythmic drive made him a sought-after sideman for Cannonball Adderley, Hank Mobley, and Wes Montgomery. He led his own trio with bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Jimmy Cobb, releasing acclaimed albums such as “Kelly Blue” and “Someday My Prince Will Come.” Kelly died in 1971 at age 39, leaving a legacy as one of the most influential hard-bop pianists of his generation.
