Maxwell is an American soul and R&B singer-songwriter from Brooklyn, New York. He emerged in the mid-1990s as part of the neo-soul movement alongside artists like D'Angelo and Erykah Badu. His debut album Urban Hang Suite (1996) established his signature blend of classic soul, quiet storm, and contemporary R&B. Maxwell is known for his smooth falsetto, introspective songwriting, and meticulous production.
