Horace Silver

Horace Silver was an American jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader born in Norwalk, Connecticut, in 1928. He rose to prominence in the 1950s as a key figure in the hard bop movement, co-founding the Jazz Messengers with Art Blakey before leading his own quintet. Silver’s compositions such as “Song for My Father,” “The Preacher,” and “Doodlin’” became jazz standards, blending blues, gospel, and Latin influences with a signature funky, groove-oriented piano style. He recorded extensively for Blue Note Records from the mid-1950s through the 1970s, releasing landmark albums including Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers, Song for My Father, and The Cape Verdean Blues. Later in his career he explored spiritual and funk-infused jazz on his own Silveto label. Silver remained active until his death in 2014 and is widely regarded as one of the most influential pianists and composers in post-bebop jazz.
