Wilbur James Cobb was an American jazz drummer born in 1929 in Washington, D.C. He became one of the most recorded drummers in jazz history, known for his work with Miles Davis, Wynton Kelly, and Cannonball Adderley. Cobb played on the seminal 1959 album Kind of Blue and remained active into the 21st century, leading his own groups and performing with younger musicians. His style combined swing, bebop, and hard bop, emphasizing tasteful support and dynamic control. He received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009 and continued touring until shortly before his death in 2020.
