The "5" Royales

The "5" Royales were an American R&B vocal group formed in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in the late 1940s. Originally a gospel act called the Royal Sons Quintet, they transitioned to secular R&B and became known for their energetic performances and songwriting. Their 1952 single "Baby Don't Do It" reached number one on the Billboard R&B chart, followed by further hits such as "Help Me Somebody" and "Dedicated to the One I Love." The group recorded for Apollo, King, and Vee-Jay, and their material was later covered by acts including the Shirelles and James Brown. Their sound blended gospel fervor with jump blues and early rock and roll, influencing the development of soul music.
