About

Yuri Ahronovitch was a Russian-born Israeli conductor known for his work with major European orchestras. Born in Leningrad in 1932, he studied at the Leningrad Conservatory and emigrated to Israel in 1972. He served as chief conductor of the Cologne Philharmonic Orchestra from 1975 to 1986 and held the same post with the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra from 1982 to 1987. Ahronovitch was noted for his interpretations of Russian and Romantic repertoire, recording extensively for labels including EMI and Deutsche Grammophon. He also appeared regularly as a guest conductor with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and other leading ensembles. His discography includes complete symphony cycles and acclaimed performances of works by Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, and Mahler.
