About

Paul Desmond Quartet was the primary recording and performing vehicle for Canadian-born alto saxophonist Paul Desmond in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Desmond, best known for his work with the Dave Brubeck Quartet and the composition of the jazz standard "Take Five," used the quartet to explore a lighter, more melodic chamber-jazz sound. The group typically featured guitarist Jim Hall, bassist Gene Wright or Percy Heath, and drummer Connie Kay. Their recordings for RCA Victor, including the albums "Desmond Blue" and "Take Ten," showcased Desmond's airy tone and refined phrasing. The quartet helped cement Desmond's reputation as one of the most distinctive voices in cool jazz.
