About

João Gilberto Quintet was a Brazilian jazz ensemble led by bossa nova pioneer João Gilberto. Active primarily in the 1960s and 1970s, the group performed and recorded in the United States and Brazil, blending bossa nova with jazz improvisation. Their sound featured Gilberto’s signature nylon-string guitar, soft vocals, and subtle rhythmic swing. The quintet released the album "João Gilberto Quintet in Tokyo" in 1965, capturing live performances during a Japanese tour. Members included João Gilberto on guitar and vocals alongside jazz musicians such as flutist and saxophonist supporting players. The ensemble helped introduce bossa nova to international audiences beyond Brazil. Their recordings are noted for intimate arrangements and Gilberto’s distinctive phrasing.
