About
The Monkees were an American pop-rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1965 for the NBC sitcom of the same name. Selected by producers Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider, the lineup consisted of Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork. Their debut single “Last Train to Clarksville” topped the Billboard Hot 100, and the 1966 album The Monkees became the year’s best-selling LP in the United States. Subsequent hits included “I’m a Believer,” “Daydream Believer” and “Pleasant Valley Sunday.” After creative clashes, the group gained full artistic control for the 1967 album Headquarters. The band dissolved in 1970, reunited sporadically, and continued touring with surviving members until 2021.
