Cannonball Adderley

Julian Edwin "Cannonball" Adderley was an American jazz alto saxophonist born in 1928 in Tampa, Florida. He rose to prominence in the 1950s with his brother Nat Adderley, playing hard bop and later embracing soul jazz. Adderley recorded landmark albums including Somethin' Else (1958) with Miles Davis and his own The Cannonball Adderley Quintet in San Francisco (1959). He collaborated extensively with Miles Davis, appearing on Kind of Blue, and led influential groups featuring Bobby Timmons, Sam Jones, and later George Duke and Joe Zawinul. His warm tone and blues-inflected phrasing helped popularize jazz for broader audiences in the 1960s and 1970s.
