Bob Brookmeyer was an American jazz valve trombonist, pianist, arranger, and composer born in Kansas City, Missouri. He rose to prominence in the 1950s playing with Gerry Mulligan’s quartet and later with the Jimmy Giuffre Three. Brookmeyer became a leading figure in the cool jazz and West Coast jazz scenes, known for his lyrical valve trombone style and sophisticated arranging skills. He worked extensively as a studio musician in New York and Los Angeles, contributed arrangements to major big bands, and taught at institutions including the New England Conservatory. Notable projects include his recordings with Stan Getz, his own quartet and sextet releases, and his later work leading the New Art Orchestra in Europe. Brookmeyer received multiple Grammy nominations and remained active until his death in 2011.
