About
Seiji Ozawa is a Japanese conductor and composer born in 1935 in Shenyang, China. He studied in Tokyo and later at Tanglewood with Charles Munch and Pierre Monteux. Ozawa became music director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, then the San Francisco Symphony, and served as music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1973 to 2002. He founded the Saito Kinen Orchestra and Festival in Matsumoto, Japan, and led the Vienna State Opera from 2002 to 2010. Ozawa is known for his broad repertoire spanning Romantic symphonies, contemporary works, and opera, and has recorded extensively with major orchestras. He has collaborated with soloists including Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and Martha Argerich.
