Scott LaFaro was an American jazz bassist and composer born in 1936 in Newark, New Jersey. He rose to prominence in the late 1950s as a member of the Bill Evans Trio alongside drummer Paul Motian, helping redefine the role of the bass in jazz with his virtuosic technique and melodic approach. LaFaro’s innovative playing featured prominently on landmark recordings such as Portrait in Jazz and Sunday at the Village Vanguard. He also collaborated with leading figures including Stan Getz, Ornette Coleman, and Victor Feldman. Tragically, LaFaro died in a car accident in 1961 at the age of 25, leaving behind a brief but influential body of work that continues to inspire bassists worldwide.
