Stan Getz was an American jazz saxophonist born in Philadelphia in 1927. He rose to prominence in the 1940s with Woody Herman’s band and became a leading figure in cool jazz and bossa nova. His 1964 collaboration with João Gilberto and Astrud Gilberto on “The Girl from Ipanema” brought bossa nova to mainstream audiences worldwide. Getz recorded for Verve, Columbia, and other major labels, winning multiple Grammy Awards. He remained active until his death in 1991, leaving a legacy of lyrical tenor saxophone playing across bebop, cool jazz, and Brazilian-influenced styles.
