About
Gustav Mahler was an Austrian composer and conductor born in 1860 in Bohemia. He served as director of the Vienna Court Opera and later the New York Philharmonic. His nine completed symphonies and song cycles such as Des Knaben Wunderhorn and Kindertotenlieder blend late-Romantic orchestration with folk elements and psychological depth. Mahler’s music influenced 20th-century composers including Schoenberg, Shostakovich, and Britten. He died in 1911, leaving his Tenth Symphony unfinished.
