About
Astrud Gilberto was a Brazilian samba and bossa nova singer born in Salvador, Bahia in 1940. She rose to international fame in 1963 with her English-language vocal on Stan Getz and João Gilberto’s “The Girl from Ipanema,” which earned a Grammy and became a global standard. Her soft, understated delivery helped popularize bossa nova in the United States and Europe. Subsequent albums such as The Astrud Gilberto Album (1965) and collaborations with producers Creed Taylor and arranger Deodato expanded her catalog across jazz, MPB, and pop. She recorded for Verve, CTI, and her own private imprint, maintaining an active touring and recording career into the 2000s.
