Bernard Haitink was a Dutch conductor and violinist born in Amsterdam in 1929. He rose to prominence as chief conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra from 1961 to 1988, later serving as music director of the London Philharmonic, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Haitink was renowned for his clear, unmannered interpretations of the symphonic repertoire, particularly Bruckner, Mahler, and Beethoven, and recorded extensively for Philips and Decca. He retired from conducting in 2022 and died in 2021.
