Tamás Vásáry is a Hungarian classical pianist and conductor born in 1933. He studied at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest and won the Liszt Prize in 1947. After leaving Hungary in 1956 he built an international career performing with major orchestras and recording extensively for Deutsche Grammophon. Vásáry later turned to conducting and served as music director of the Bournemouth Sinfonietta and the Northern Sinfonia. His repertoire centers on Romantic piano literature, especially Chopin and Liszt, and he has collaborated with conductors such as Sir Georg Solti and conductors of the Berlin Philharmonic.
