About
Jean Martinon was a French conductor and composer born in Lyon in 1910. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire and began his career as a violinist before turning to conducting. During World War II he was interned in a German camp, where he composed several works. After the war he held principal posts with the Orchestre National de la Radio Française, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestre National de France. His compositions span symphonies, concertos, and chamber music, often blending French impressionist influences with neoclassical clarity. He recorded extensively for major labels and championed both contemporary French music and the standard repertoire until his death in 1976.
