About
Johann Strauss II (1825–1899) was an Austrian composer born in Vienna, widely known as the “Waltz King.” Son of Johann Strauss I, he led his own orchestra from 1844 and became the dominant figure of Viennese light music. His catalog includes over 400 waltzes, polkas and marches; the Blue Danube (1866) and Tales from the Vienna Woods remain global staples. He also composed successful operettas such as Die Fledermaus (1874) and Der Zigeunerbaron (1885). His polished orchestral sound and dance rhythms defined the golden age of Viennese music and influenced generations of light-classical composers.
