About
Cyril Scott was an English composer, writer, and poet born in Oxton, Cheshire, in 1879. He studied in Germany and became known as a leading figure in British musical impressionism, often called the 'father of modern British music' by some contemporaries. His compositions span piano works, orchestral pieces, chamber music, and songs, with a distinctive harmonic language influenced by Debussy and Eastern philosophy. Scott also wrote extensively on occultism, alternative medicine, and theosophy, publishing dozens of books alongside his musical output. Notable works include his First Symphony, Piano Concerto, and numerous piano miniatures such as Lotus Land. He maintained friendships with fellow composers including Percy Grainger and was championed by conductors like Thomas Beecham. Scott lived much of his life in London and continued composing until his death in 1970.
