About
The Academy of Ancient Music is a British period-instrument orchestra founded in 1973 by Christopher Hogwood in Cambridge. It specializes in historically informed performances of Baroque and Classical repertoire, using authentic instruments and practices of the 18th century. The ensemble quickly gained international recognition through its extensive discography on Decca’s L’Oiseau-Lyre label and later Harmonia Mundi. Early recordings of Mozart symphonies and Handel operas established its reputation for scholarly yet vibrant interpretations. Subsequent music directors have included Richard Egarr and current leader Laurence Cummings. The orchestra maintains a busy touring schedule and continues to record for major labels while running educational programs from its London base.
