About

Philly Joe Jones was an American jazz drummer born in Philadelphia in 1923. He rose to prominence in the 1950s as a member of Miles Davis’s First Great Quintet, contributing to landmark recordings including ‘Round About Midnight’ and ‘Milestones’. Known for his crisp, inventive drumming and powerful swing, he became one of the most sought-after session players of the hard-bop era, appearing on dozens of Blue Note and Prestige sessions. Jones also led his own groups and recorded as a leader for Riverside and Atlantic, releasing albums such as ‘Philly Joe’s Beat’ and ‘Showcase’. He spent time in Europe in the late 1960s and early 1970s before returning to the U.S., where he continued performing and teaching until his death in 1985.
