About
Gustav Holst was an English composer, arranger and teacher born in Cheltenham in 1874. He studied at the Royal College of Music and later taught at St Paul’s Girls’ School and Morley College. Best known for the orchestral suite The Planets (1914–1916), he also wrote choral works such as The Hymn of Jesus and the opera Savitri. His style blends English folk influences, Hindu mysticism and modernist harmony. Holst’s other notable pieces include the St Paul’s Suite, Egdon Heath and the First Choral Symphony. He died in London in 1934.
