Claudio Abbado was an Italian conductor born in Milan in 1933. He studied at the Milan Conservatory and made his professional debut in 1958. He served as principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the Berlin Philharmonic, where he was artistic director from 1989 to 2002. Abbado founded the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and the Orchestra Mozart in Bologna. He was known for his refined interpretations of Mahler, Bruckner, and contemporary music, and for championing new works by composers such as Luigi Nono and György Ligeti. Abbado received numerous awards including the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize and multiple Grammy Awards. He died in Bologna in 2014.
