About
Ludwig van Beethoven was a German composer and pianist whose work bridged the Classical and Romantic eras. Born in Bonn in 1770, he moved to Vienna in 1792 where he studied with Haydn and quickly established himself as a virtuoso pianist and composer. Despite progressive hearing loss from his late twenties, he continued to produce groundbreaking symphonies, piano sonatas, string quartets, and the opera Fidelio. His nine symphonies, particularly the Third, Fifth, and Ninth, redefined orchestral scale and emotional depth. Late works such as the late quartets and the Diabelli Variations pushed harmonic and structural boundaries. Beethoven died in Vienna in 1827; his influence on subsequent generations of composers remains unparalleled.
