Vladimir Ashkenazy is a Russian-Icelandic pianist and conductor born in Gorky in 1937. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory and won the 1962 Tchaikovsky Competition. After leaving the Soviet Union in 1963 he settled in Iceland, later becoming an Icelandic citizen. Ashkenazy built a distinguished career as a solo pianist before focusing increasingly on conducting, serving as principal conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Czech Philharmonic. He is renowned for his recordings of Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Beethoven, and Shostakovich, many of which remain reference editions. Ashkenazy has collaborated with major orchestras worldwide and continues to appear as a guest conductor.
