Akon is a Senegalese-American singer, songwriter and producer born Aliaune Thiam. Raised between Senegal and New Jersey, he broke through in the mid-2000s with the hit single Locked Up and the multi-platinum album Konvicted. Known for his distinctive Auto-Tuned vocals and dancehall-inflected R&B, Akon has released global smashes such as Smack That and Don’t Matter. He founded Konvict Muzik and KonLive, has produced for artists including Lady Gaga and Michael Jackson, and launched the Akon Lighting Africa initiative.
