About
Sergei Prokofiev was a Russian composer, pianist, and conductor born in 1891 in Sontsovka, Russian Empire. He studied at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory and gained early recognition for his modernist style. After periods in the United States and Paris, he returned to the Soviet Union in 1936. His career highlights include the ballets Romeo and Juliet and Cinderella, the opera War and Peace, and the symphonic fairy tale Peter and the Wolf. Prokofiev composed across genres including symphonies, concertos, chamber music, and film scores such as Alexander Nevsky. His music blends neoclassical clarity with sharp rhythms and lyrical melodies. He died in Moscow in 1953 on the same day as Stalin.
