Nappy Roots

Nappy Roots is an American hip hop group formed in 1995 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The sextet gained mainstream attention with their 2002 major-label debut Watermelon, Chicken & Gritz, which peaked at number 24 on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum. Their follow-up Wooden Leather (2003) also charted successfully, featuring the hit single “Awnaw.” The group is known for its Southern hip hop sound blending conscious lyrics, funk samples, and country influences. Core members include Skinny DeVille, B. Stille, Ron Clutch, Milledgeville, Fish Scales, and R. Prophet. After leaving major labels they continued releasing independent projects and touring throughout the 2010s.
